NIKON 990 FIRMWARE UPGRADE FOR USB
- DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS -

This procedure works with Windows 98 SE . Please note that
it has not been tested with other versions of Windows.

NIKON have requested, in a polite letter, that I remove the copyrighted Nikon files from this website. In compliance with their request I have immediately done so. Here's part of what they said about the posting:
"We consider your actions to be inappropriate,
unhelpful and above all else, illegal. "

While I can't and won't contest the "illegal" part...
I certainly would question the categorization of my actions as "unhelpful" !

In any case, here are instructions that may help you.
To upgrade your camera's firmware without installing the NikonView software, you will need the following four files from your NikonView 3.0 CD :

  • clpxUSB.inf
  • NkDevice.dll
  • nkdusb.dll
  • nkdusd.dll

To upgrade your camera's firmware without installing the NikonView software, you will also need the following two files that may be downloaded from a Nikon website :

  • firmware.bin
  • UploaderUSB.exe

To expedite the installation of the software and firmware, you may find it advantageous to place all six of the above files into a single directory (folder) on your computer's hard drive. You may create, for example, a folder named "firmware" which will then be ready for the next update that may come sometime in the future.

  • 1) Attach the USB cord to the camera, turn on the camera to A-Rec
  • 2) MAKE SURE THE TIMEOUT IS SET TO 30 MINUTES!
  • 3) Be sure to use a fresh, fully charged set of batteries or the AC adapter or a fully charged external battery pack
  • 4) Attach the USB cord to the computer
  • 5) The computer will recognize that a new USB device is attached and will look for a driver. Point it to the firmware directory/folder which contains these files, and follow instructions that will appear on screen.
  • 6) You may be prompted to provide the Win98 CD. If so, point the search to the Win98 directory on the CD. Follow instructions. You may be asked to reboot. Do so.
  • 7) Once you have rebooted the computer, turn the camera off and on again, to A-Rec. Make sure that the batteries are still good. Be sure the camera timeout is still set to 30 minutes, though the entire remaining procedure will take somewhat less than three minutes.
  • 8) From your firmware directory/folder double-click on the "UploaderUSB.exe" file to run it.
  • 9) If all is well, the upload will start. It will take about two minutes. DO NOT TURN OFF THE CAMERA during this time. Wait for the next message:
  • 10) The computer will tell you when the upload is complete. At this time, you may disconnect the USB cord from the camera. Turn off the camera. While holding the "MENU" button depressed, turn the camera back on to A-Rec setting. You will see on the camera's LCD screen the current version number, which should now read E990 V1.1
  • That's it! This procedure worked perfectly on my camera. Good luck to you, you're on your own!
